Week 14
1. What article did you choose to read for your article of choice?

2. Describe the video resources you watched?
They were stories about kids who didn't realize what they were doing was unsafe. They didn't realize that anyone could find out more information about them even if all they give is an email address. The videos also included bullying. Adults and kids alike create websites and screen names to hurt other people. If you give out your information, it is likely that they will use it against you.
3. Write a paragraph describing what your most important "take-aways" were from the readings and video?
Be safe. Never put too much information on any website. If someone wanted to, they could do searches and find out everything about you. Also, if you know someone found out a password to your email, social networking site, etc. Change it immediately and let your friends know. This will protect you when/if someone else has logged on and said things that you wouldn't say.
4. Write a paragraph or more describing the details of your "doing" experience (you don't need to include any names). This might include:
a. what did the person already know about the topic
She knew more than me. She knew not to put anything you wouldn't mind if anyone saw on the internet because once it is there, it available for anyone to see/find. She also said not to let your kids go unsupervised while on the computer. This will help to keep them safe. Also, there are programs that block things such as chat rooms and even a firewall that you can put on your computer so parents can see who their kids are talking to at all times.
b. what was the person's reaction to what you shared
She wasn't surprised. She realizes that things happens if you aren't careful. She also said the internet is a great tool but can be very dangerous too.
c. what surprised you about the person's reaction to your message
It happened near my parent's home. It is always strange when things happen closer to home because everyone always thinks "oh that will never happen around here."
d. what do you think the person will do with what you have shared, etc.
I believe she will keep doing what she has been doing. She will continue to talk with her friends and her kids about internet safety and make sure they are aware of the dangers. She will also always be aware of who her kids are talking to on the internet.

Week 10
In the first video, I Love Spiders, the teacher created a website for the class project. The students were able to use disposable cameras and take pictures of different spiders in the area and post them, along with captions onto the site. They were also able to exchange these photos with another class at a different school, even in a different state. I thought that was super neat and something that kids would love to participate in.
In the second video, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See, the teacher explained that her class of students was not experienced with computers when they entered her classroom, but they loved to explore, learn, and teach each other. This allowed them to be rather proficient on the computer by the second semester. I also thought creating the class video was neat because it was a way to involve the parents. It is one thing to send a newsletter home to parents but they feel so much more involved when they receive copies of these videos that their child has helped create.
In the third and final video, Habitats, I noticed that the kids knew a lot about computers. Some of them even seemed to know more than the teacher. This means it is extremely important to stay up to date with technology so that our students do not pass us. We need to stay current on our laws as well, because we need to teach things such as the copyright laws to our students.
I hope to be able to implement lots of technology into my classrooms, as well as continue to learn more about it!

What technologies are available in the classroom?
She has a laptop, VCR/DVD player, overhead projector, and a "mobile" computer lab. The students also go into the school computer lab with a specialist a few times each week.
What technologies do you wish were available in the classroom?
She wishes she had a digital camera and a video camera as well. Some classrooms at the school have a type of smart board called a Promethean board where you can hook it up to your computer and teach from there.
She mentioned something I found interesting. Title 1 schools get more money, meaning they have more "toys".
How do you use technology to get ideas and prepare materials for the classroom?
She uses her laptop a lot to create worksheets, etc. for her students to do at centers. She also uses the clip art. Another way she uses technology is the internet. She is able to look at the UEN website for ideas for lesson plans. A final way she uses technology is by having a class website for her students parents, which she admitted was not as easy keeping up on as she thought.
Do you think kindergartners are too young to use technology themselves?
As long as it is on their level, she feels that the kids love using the technology. In her experience, they like to play with different programs and manipulate pictures, etc. They also use pictures to make class books for their class library.
Do you think the kids enjoy using technology when they have the opportunity?
She definitely thinks kids enjoy using technology. In her classroom, she makes using the laptops a "choice activity". The kids must finish their "job activity" in order to use the computers. It is a great motivator! The kids also really enjoy going and using the computers in the school computer lab!

Science Challenge (week 2)

As I did my project, I learned lots of new things. At first, it took me a while to find a lesson/experiment to perform that used one of the resources that were provided. Once I figured that out, I got to play with the light sensor and thought it was pretty cool. I think my future students will really enjoy activities like these because they are so hands on. I hope that the schools I will be teaching in, have resources like these available for me to implement in my classroom(s).

Science Challenge (week 1)
For the my science activity, we will use the light sensor inside (with no sun) as well as outside (with sun) to see that the sun is a source of heat and light.
The Content
Standard 5 - Students will understand that the sun is the main source of heat and light for things living on Earth. They will also understand that the motion of rubbing objects together may produce heat.
Objective 1 - Provide evidence showing that the sun is the source of heat and light for Earth.
The Pedagogy
Plan and conduct a simple experiment. Observing. Measuring. These work with the content because we will conduct the experiment, then use the data to explain what occurred inside and outside.
The Technology
Light Sensor. Digital camera. We will use the light sensor to measure the different readings inside (no sun) and outside (sunny). We will use the camera to document where the readings take place.

Natural Disasters around the World Virtual Tour
I viewed Carol Hoffers, Lauren Payne, and Beth Peach's virtual tours.
Doing virtual tours has upsides and downsides in an elementary school classroom. A few upsides is that your students can see and visit places that they would not normally have the opportunity to see. A downside to them is some things would be better to see in person and experience. I hope that I can effectively incorporate google earth into my future classrooms.

This activity will cover the 4th grade science core, standard 2. This standard states that students will understand the elements of weather (natural disasters). I chose to do a virtual tour on this topic because I am from Houston and lots of natural disasters occur there. I also plan to teach there after graduation, meaning I could use this tour if applicable. I feel that this Google Earth tour would be the best way to show my students because it is easy to talk about what happens, but children rarely know where these events their parents talk about occur. I feel it is important for people of all ages to know and understand what is going on in the world.

I feel that it will be difficult to implement this idea of digital storytelling in a kindergarten classroom because the children will not all be able to create a video. Something that I hope to do is to maybe make class stories where each child is in charge of a picture for the story. It may be difficult in all grades because not all students have regular access to computers, which is required for this type of project.

Week 2
This week I learned a lot about creating websites and all sorts of different online applications. My favorite was learning how to use Skype. I feel it is a very useful application because my family lives in Houston so it is a great way to keep in touch with them. When you are having a conversation with someone, it is one thing to talk to them but it's another thing to be able to see them as well.
I also created a website this week, the link is on the side of my blog! You should definitely check it out! I kind of went above and beyond (by mistake) and did multiple applications so I made several pages. Feel free to take a look!
Sorry these pictures are not in order but anyways, my storyboard is about a trip on the ABC train. We will learn what foods start with what letter and hopefully make it to our destination so that next time everyone can sing!
